One of my aunts taught me to tie my shoes. She's left handed and uses granny knots. I've always been told I tie my shoes funny...My children do the "bunny ears" method.

I limped along with granny knots for 55 years until I found this site two years ago. Now it takes me twice as long to tie my shoes because I start with the granny, then remember that's wrong and go with the square knot. Left hander

Im a square knot wannabe :( I usually tend to revert to granny knots as soon as I stop thinking about how I knot my shoes. I cant think of that all my time, so granny knot it is...

I'm a square knotter and my shoes come undone frequently... not sure what the deal is here...

The square knot did the trick. Many thanks!!!

50 years I have been doing it wrong. Hand tying a quilt and had to be sure what a square knot was. Guess I was a "granny" all along!

I am 34 and never couldn't understand why only my shoes laces get untied all the time.. I was fedup and finally to search on net to find a better knot. I just tried this new knot.. hope this will change my laces to stay... thanks again

I have never tied either: I make an overhand then loop ; make 1st rabbit ear; make loop; push/pull thru; vua la! I use Ashley's BetterBowKnot: Same proceedure; make 2 loops. From Ashley's Book of knots

Turns out that I am a square knotter. Now that I think back, I have never had problems with shoelaces becoming untied and have been unable to relate to others who do. My shoe self esteem has risen through the roof!

Thanks for the advice. I used to be a 'granny' but now thanks to you I am a 'square'.

Yeah, the Secure knot is the BEST!

I had to pick up a shoe and check but it seems I have learnt Granny's Way! I always double knot when running to avoid stoping which is a real frustration especially in a race

I love your shoelaces.

I learned to tie square vs. granny knots when I was a scout. Squares are much better knots and don't slip.

After shoulder surgery I now use a one handed double slip-knot... 2 loops to the left side

I use Ian's Secure knot.. it's quick, easy, and oh so secure. I've yet to have it come undone.

Since space is limited: You have a granny, and possibly a Square or Thief's knot for the other. In real life one must have have the ends of each rope labeled. Dead end meaning it has no load on it, it is the end of the rope.; or live end meanin

Not even a reef knot is good enough for me sometimes. I have to use a double Carrick bend, with two triple fisherman's knots either side. Still comes undone sometimes though :(

Interesting, thanks. I always wondered why my shoes were continually coming untied.

I actually grabbed a shoe to check! I guess I do it "wrong," but I do the "bunny through the hole twice" thing too.

Wow! Fifty years-old and I find out I've been tying my shoelaces wrong all these years. No more granny's for me!

I usually do a slip knot under the tongue of my shoe and keep on going about my business.

whats a anglers knot??????????
Friday, February 03, 2006
i used to tie granny knots, but now i've learned the difference. i now no longer need unsightly "double knots" to hold the knot where the granny knot wouldn't. my shoes don't slip, and they look neat.

i dont care
Sunday, January 15, 2006
you people dont seem to relize that the normal method is a square knot (or granny) with draw loops
Friday, December 30, 2005
I tie them loose so they untie I like the way the shoes feel when they slowly loosen up

Knot Knut I, putting a Double Overhand starter, then (squareknot fashion) taking the 2nd loop around "through the hole" twice. "Pull, flip, flip, tighten", not "pull, flip tighten" Dbl.O holds strain: min. slippage. 2nd loop pass locks loops.

I was sometimes ridiculed for the unsophisticated way I tied my shoes, I cross left over right; make two loops; right loop crosses over left. I never realised if you tugged on the loops you end up with a square knot. I learnt this way in kindergarten.

uhh...
Monday, September 19, 2005
i definitely just use the bow method like normal people. why even use the square or granny? there is sooooo much lace left over
Monday, September 12, 2005
I get my wife to tie them and untie them
Saturday, September 10, 2005
it made no sense! i didn`t get it.
Sunday, September 04, 2005
i dont get either of them. i just use the one i grew up with. which seems to be the "normal" one... :-P
Friday, September 02, 2005
Thats why i don't get my parents to teach me to tie my shoelaces. I did it myself
Wednesday, August 31, 2005
I Tie them loose so they untie themselves
Sunday, August 28, 2005
I use the Ian Knot, you can learn it here: www.fieggen.com (fastest knot in the world!) :)
Tuesday, August 23, 2005
i didn't realise there were so many ways to tie your shoes......
Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Another way to tell the difference is that the loops want to lay vertically on your foot (Granny), rather than left to right (Square). I had to teach my wife of 40-something as well when we met...
Monday, August 01, 2005

The dreaded day has come for me! I have the feat of teaching my six year old how to tie his shoes this summer! All my life I have hid from onlookers as I tied my shoes knowing that I am the only one who ties my shoes my way!
Friday, May 20, 2005
They both look the same to me! How do you do them?
Tuesday, May 10, 2005
Thanks for the info. No more double knots for me. I will teach my Girl Scout troop to tie their shoes using the SQUARE knot instead of a granny!
