A shoe store salesman taught me a "1-1/2 knot" many years ago, especially for use with round laces. After making a regular shoe knot but before tightening, put one loop and the lace end on the same side through the center of the knot a second time. Unlike a double knot, it's easy to untie when you want to, but doesn't come out when you don't want it to... the boy scout definiton of a good knot.

Yes, I have sailed, and climbed and caved and hiked and walked around the city. A square bow will usually last, tieing the loops in another overhand knot improves it. I have seen cowboy knots and have not learned them - but they are designed to hole a pack in place as the horse or mule o burro walks all day. And they are not easy to untie!

I prefer the Ukrainian Shoe Lacing Technique with regular shoelaces. It fixes all the problems of regular shoe lacing.

Fun article. Ain't physics grand? I use a knot that I use when fishing offshore. It has been tested to be as strong as the line you are using. It doesn't come undone unless you really want it to. Thanks

Took me time to learn all of the comments, however I actually enjoyed the article. It proved to be very helpful to me and Im certain to all of the commenters right here! It is all the time nice when you cant only be informed, but in addition engaged! Im positive you had joy writing this article. Anyway, in my language, there will not be much good source like this.

Good information and well presented. If anyone has ever sailed the difference between a square (reef) knot and a granny knot can be a painful learning experience.

Massive help.

25K2GS I really like and appreciate your article. Fantastic.

It's really hard to understand just looking at the pics... The same lace has to pass through the loop of the other, but in the opposite direction. So eg - left loop flipped towards me to pass the loop will have to be flipped away from me the second time.

Hello I am so thrilled I found your website, I really found you by accident, while I was browsing on Digg for something else, Regardless I am here now and would just like to say thanks a lot for a fantastic post and a all round interesting blog (I also love the theme/design), I don? have time to read through it all at the moment but I have saved it and also included your RSS feeds, so when I have

Check out Ian's site. It's a wealth of inaoomftirn for shoe-tying knots and lacing styles. He's coming out with a book too. Such exciting things! And if you have a young child, or know anyone with slippery shoelaces, teach them the secure knot. It's beyond fantastic.

It depends on whether you're left handed or right handed.

Friday, May 18, 2012
I answered "other" because I use Ian's Secure Knot, which is basically the square knot with an extra loop. The result is rock-solid, but still easy to untie with a tug.

I am trying to teach my son to tie his shoes but he really struggles. Which know is the EASIEST to teach?

There is the fact the the square knot holds two strings together, and takes a lot to be pulled apart. However, the granny knot is recommended for tying loops together as in the process of tying shoestrings. This puts more friction on the individual parts as opposed to leaving two ends of the loops to be easily pulled by the nearest snag on the ground. GRANNYS UNITE!!

STEP 1 You can tie the starting knot by passing the left lace over the right (shown at left), or by wrapping right over left. Either method can yield a balanced knot or a granny knot-it depends on what you do afterward. STEP 2 Next you make a loop with the right lace (shown at left) or the left. Either choice can yield a balanced knot or a granny knot-independent of which starting knot you

for some reason i do square on the right and granny on the left. never paid attention until i read your post.

Monday, May 30, 2011
I canT wait to try this. My grandson's shoes come untied more times than either he or I are willing to retie them.

Friday, February 18, 2011
I tie my shoes with a Ian knot.

Tuesday, October 12, 2010
My mother told me that our family usually used the double knot, sometimes I employ the double and others the square, depends of the type of rope. Thanks

thanks for the tip they help for some shoes

Its amazing how one of those "its really obvious" things passes us by. I'm a climber and a sailor who is proud of my ropework, and it seems that I've only just learned to tie my shoelaces at the age of 41! I had always focused on the loops rather than the knot they made and have made double knots for security. I think I'll take this exercise to my kids cubs and scouts this evening.

Saturday, March 27, 2010
I hadn't noticed that square-vs.-granny distinction is applicable to shoes. The real test wil be my kids' shoes! Thanks.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010
im just doing this for a school demonstration :P

Thursday, December 31, 2009
Wow, yeah, me too. Never made the connection with the granny knot, but began double tying instead. Until now.

Tuesday, December 22, 2009
I never knew this. Took it for granted since I started wearing shoes. Thanks for the info. Cheers!

Friday, August 28, 2009
I learned this over 30 years ago from the back of the package of a new pair of shoelaces. I knew the difference between a granny knot and a square knot from Girl Scouts, but I never made the connection to my shoelaces until I bought that new pair!

Monday, June 29, 2009
Thanks. I honestly did know this fact and have suffered dragging laces.M

Sunday, May 03, 2009
wow i enver noticed that

Thursday, April 09, 2009
Nobody in my family taught me how to tie my shoes. I have a very distinct memory of sitting at the top of the staircase with one brother and him trying to teach me. No good. I was watching Captain Kangaroo when he explained it step by step. Thank you Captain and say hi to Bunny Rabbit for me!

Friday, March 27, 2009
I use the double-over method. It has never done me wrong =>

Monday, March 23, 2009
how yu tied yur shoes laces

Thursday, March 12, 2009
I use the square knot. Although the process my husband uses for tying his shoe is very awkward, he ends up with a square knot too. I always wondered why some people had trouble with laces coming untied frequently. Now I know.

Monday, March 09, 2009
i am shocked, for 35-38 years i used the wrong knot

Thursday, March 05, 2009
i use the ian knot(tom fool knot)

Friday, February 06, 2009
Straight lace

Friday, January 23, 2009
I use the square knot and i think it's because i'm left-handed but I still have this problem?

Friday, January 16, 2009
Doubled Square Knot

Friday, January 09, 2009
All these years...I was totally misled. Thanks for the great tip.

Monday, November 24, 2008
what do u call the knots on your shoes called the Butterfly knot

Thursday, November 20, 2008
Square AND double :)

Friday, November 07, 2008
I've always had to do a double knot because I learned a granny knot...and it never stayed tied. Now I know why. Sure am glad that wiki led me here! I can teach my kids (now at lace-tying ages) how to do it right.

Sunday, October 26, 2008
Granny knots here, and no plans to change. Chicks like looking at my butt when I re-tie my shoes. What right do I have to deny them that simple pleasure?

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Wednesday, October 15, 2008
I've always used a square knot simply because it looks neater, keeping the bow aligned properly. It's also the best way to make a little girl's hair bow stay straight. ;)

Wednesday, October 08, 2008
I wanna do the 4-looped knot!

Sunday, July 13, 2008
I'm a lefty and have always tied a square knot

Sunday, June 15, 2008
One of my aunts taught me to tie my shoes. She's left handed and uses granny knots. I've always been told I tie my shoes funny...My children do the "bunny ears" method.

Thursday, June 12, 2008
I use square knot from my birth!!! :D

Tuesday, April 29, 2008
uqh i need it for a school paper :|

Thursday, April 10, 2008
I was a granny for 30 years until I found it's hip to be square

Wednesday, April 02, 2008
I limped along with granny knots for 55 years until I found this site two years ago. Now it takes me twice as long to tie my shoes because I start with the granny, then remember that's wrong and go with the square knot. Left hander

Monday, March 24, 2008
Square knot is fair, I do a modified square, I go around twice on the top.

Wednesday, March 12, 2008
mon the granny knot

Wednesday, March 05, 2008
i have used something elsefor a while but iam now square Enter coiimment here

Wednesday, February 27, 2008
Cool knots

Monday, January 21, 2008
Im a square knot wannabe :( I usually tend to revert to granny knots as soon as I stop thinking about how I knot my shoes. I cant think of that all my time, so granny knot it is...

Monday, December 31, 2007
I'm a square knotter and my shoes come undone frequently... not sure what the deal is here...

Monday, December 17, 2007
The square knot did the trick. Many thanks!!!

Saturday, December 15, 2007
50 years I have been doing it wrong. Hand tying a quilt and had to be sure what a square knot was. Guess I was a "granny" all along!

Tuesday, November 27, 2007
I am 34 and never couldn't understand why only my shoes laces get untied all the time.. I was fedup and finally to search on net to find a better knot. I just tried this new knot.. hope this will change my laces to stay... thanks again

Thursday, November 01, 2007
I have never tied either: I make an overhand then loop ; make 1st rabbit ear; make loop; push/pull thru; vua la! I use Ashley's BetterBowKnot: Same proceedure; make 2 loops. From Ashley's Book of knots

Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Turns out that I am a square knotter. Now that I think back, I have never had problems with shoelaces becoming untied and have been unable to relate to others who do. My shoe self esteem has risen through the roof!

Friday, June 15, 2007
Thanks for the advice. I used to be a 'granny' but now thanks to you I am a 'square'.

Saturday, June 02, 2007
Yeah, the Secure knot is the BEST!

Tuesday, May 29, 2007
I had to pick up a shoe and check but it seems I have learnt Granny's Way! I always double knot when running to avoid stoping which is a real frustration especially in a race

Thursday, April 26, 2007
I love your shoelaces.

Monday, April 09, 2007
I learned to tie square vs. granny knots when I was a scout. Squares are much better knots and don't slip.

Tuesday, March 06, 2007
After shoulder surgery I now use a one handed double slip-knot... 2 loops to the left side

Tuesday, December 26, 2006
I use Ian's Secure knot.. it's quick, easy, and oh so secure. I've yet to have it come undone.

Thursday, December 07, 2006
i think i reallt dont have a wayof tying my shoes i just tye them anyway i can!!!

Saturday, December 02, 2006
"I think the squarew knot and the granny knot are the same" so do i geofry

Thursday, November 23, 2006
Since space is limited: You have a granny, and possibly a Square or Thief's knot for the other. In real life one must have have the ends of each rope labeled. Dead end meaning it has no load on it, it is the end of the rope.; or live end meanin

Thursday, November 02, 2006
Thursday November 2,2006 I think the squarew knot and the granny knot are the same

Saturday, October 14, 2006
Shoelaces are really important, because Im in Cross Country. Go Spartans!

Wednesday, September 13, 2006
Not even a reef knot is good enough for me sometimes. I have to use a double Carrick bend, with two triple fisherman's knots either side. Still comes undone sometimes though :(

Friday, September 01, 2006
Interesting, thanks. I always wondered why my shoes were continually coming untied.

Friday, August 25, 2006
I actually grabbed a shoe to check! I guess I do it "wrong," but I do the "bunny through the hole twice" thing too.

Monday, August 07, 2006
Wow! Fifty years-old and I find out I've been tying my shoelaces wrong all these years. No more granny's for me!

Wednesday, May 24, 2006
See sequence to tie shoelaces at

Monday, April 03, 2006
I usually do a slip knot under the tongue of my shoe and keep on going about my business.

Monday, March 13, 2006
whats a anglers knot??????????

Friday, February 03, 2006
i used to tie granny knots, but now i've learned the difference. i now no longer need unsightly "double knots" to hold the knot where the granny knot wouldn't. my shoes don't slip, and they look neat.

Tuesday, January 31, 2006
i dont care

Sunday, January 15, 2006
you people dont seem to relize that the normal method is a square knot (or granny) with draw loops

Friday, December 30, 2005
I tie them loose so they untie I like the way the shoes feel when they slowly loosen up

Monday, October 17, 2005
Knot Knut I, putting a Double Overhand starter, then (squareknot fashion) taking the 2nd loop around "through the hole" twice. "Pull, flip, flip, tighten", not "pull, flip tighten" Dbl.O holds strain: min. slippage. 2nd loop pass locks loops.

Tuesday, October 11, 2005
I was sometimes ridiculed for the unsophisticated way I tied my shoes, I cross left over right; make two loops; right loop crosses over left. I never realised if you tugged on the loops you end up with a square knot. I learnt this way in kindergarten.

Monday, September 19, 2005
i definitely just use the bow method like normal people. why even use the square or granny? there is sooooo much lace left over

Monday, September 12, 2005
I get my wife to tie them and untie them

Saturday, September 10, 2005
it made no sense! i didn`t get it.

Sunday, September 04, 2005
i dont get either of them. i just use the one i grew up with. which seems to be the "normal" one... :-P

Friday, September 02, 2005
Thats why i don't get my parents to teach me to tie my shoelaces. I did it myself

Wednesday, August 31, 2005
I Tie them loose so they untie themselves

Sunday, August 28, 2005
I use the Ian Knot, you can learn it here: (fastest knot in the world!) :)

Tuesday, August 23, 2005
i didn't realise there were so many ways to tie your shoes......

Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Another way to tell the difference is that the loops want to lay vertically on your foot (Granny), rather than left to right (Square). I had to teach my wife of 40-something as well when we met...

Monday, August 01, 2005
wow all this time i have been tying my shoes wrong. thanks alot MOM!!!!!!

Monday, August 01, 2005
Boy do I feel lame

Monday, July 11, 2005
The dreaded day has come for me! I have the feat of teaching my six year old how to tie his shoes this summer! All my life I have hid from onlookers as I tied my shoes knowing that I am the only one who ties my shoes my way!

Friday, May 20, 2005
They both look the same to me! How do you do them?

Tuesday, May 10, 2005
Thanks for the info. No more double knots for me. I will teach my Girl Scout troop to tie their shoes using the SQUARE knot instead of a granny!
